Monica Tobar is the Senior Human Resources Director for Walmart Latinoamérica in Doral, Florida, a fast‐
growing segment of Walmart International’s overall operations, with more than 3,185 stores and 385,000
associates. In this role, Monica has responsibility for leading the talent acquisition, driving key human
resources initiatives and also partnering in strategic human resources activities across the region,
supporting the five‐year business plan.
Monica initiated her career in her home country of Ecuador, and joined Walmart in 2002 as a Personnel
Manager of one of the largest Supercenters in South Florida. In 2005 Monica transitioned to the
International People Team as a Human Resources Manager, in 2007 was promoted to Senior Compensation
Manager supporting the Asia Region and in March, 2010 Monica joined the Human Resources team for
1. The first session at SMU gave me great inside of how our Latino culture can influence our
decision making process. It is important to be aware of this influence and prepare to make
business decisions that should not be necessarily driven by cultural traits.
2. The program helped me raise awareness of my cultural traits, understand how those influence
the way I relate with individuals at work and how I make decisions. Something extremely
important to me was to know that any improvement I make on my EQ can lead to be more
successful in my professional and personal life as I have the ability to change it.
